Ever hear the saying, “You are who your friends are”? You might have heard it from your parents in grade school, when groups started to form around different personalities and interests. Cliques start to form, often centered around similar expectations and behaviors — watching the same television shows and movies, forming similar habits, and even speaking and dressing like each other.
This all seems fairly innocuous at first, but ultimately, you become who you hang around with, or “the company you keep.” We’ve all heard the story about the “good kid” who began hanging out with the wrong crowd, going down the wrong path, becoming a product of their environment, so to speak. They lowered their expectations to meet the level of the people around them.
And now, as adults, the same principle applies. The difference is we are no longer unaware of the influence our peers have on us; we know better than to fall in with the wrong crowd. We are responsible for being vigilant about our surroundings and choosing a group of people that will elevate us, not bring us down.
“The quality of a person’s life is most often a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group.” —Tony Robbins

Meaningful success takes time. The rewards of patient, consistent effort are rarely immediate, but they can be extraordinary for those who stay the course.
People rarely stay stuck because they lack talent, intelligence, or drive. They stay stuck because they mistake a pattern for permanence. Patterns can be interrupted, and identity can be rebuilt. You just have to free yourself from the limiting beliefs holding you back.
Let me take you back to a moment that changed everything — the birth of the firewalk at Unleash the Power Within. This isn’t just a story about walking barefoot across burning embers. It’s a story about breaking through fear, rewriting what’s possible, and igniting a fire inside that can never be extinguished…[…]
Let me share with you some of my favorite transformation stories from the firewalk over the years — moments that still light me up because they reveal the raw, unstoppable power of human courage and breakthrough. These aren’t just tales of walking on embers; they’re stories of people stepping into their greatness, shedding old fears, and rewriting their lives forever. […]
1. Do you look up to the people you surround yourself with?
This doesn’t mean that they have to be a 28-year-old multi-millionaire, when you’re just trying to focus on getting a better job. Looking up to those around you can be as easy as admiring the way they speak, carry themselves, their accomplishments, the way they solve problems or their general approach to daily life.
“If we surround ourselves with people who are successful, who are forward-moving, who are positive, who are focused on producing results, who support us, it will challenge us to be more and do more. If you can surround yourself with people who will never let you settle for less than you can be, you have the greatest gift that anyone can hope for.” – Tony Robbins
2. Do they embody qualities you want to acquire?
Sometimes we meet people that blow us away. Do you know someone with so much charisma and positivity that you are intrigued by their very nature, and maybe even crave their company? Or perhaps someone with a collection of positive habits and demonstrated discipline that you think, I wish I had that? Whatever qualities you want to acquire, surround yourself with people who have them.
3. Look at the group of people you spend the most time with
If you take a good hard look at the people you hang around with most, then do some self-reflecting on who you are, you will find you are the average sum of them all — almost as if you carry a little piece of each of them with you. Do you want all of those pieces? If not, it could be time to re-evaluate your decisions.
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” — Jim Rohn

When I was a young man, before I discovered my purpose and started building the life I wanted, I was caught in a peer group that was stuck in a cycle of limitation. These were people I grew up with—friends from my neighborhood, people who didn’t have big dreams or the tools to break free from their circumstances. Our conversations were often about what wasn’t possible, who had it easier, and why the world was unfair. I didn’t realize at the time how much that environment was shaping my identity. I thought I was just “being me,” but in truth, I was absorbing their mindset, their fears, and their excuses. It was like living in a fog of low expectations, and it kept me small.
One specific moment stands out. I remember sitting on a stoop with a few of these friends, and the talk was about how “people like us” never get ahead, how success was for others, not for us. I felt a knot in my stomach, a mix of frustration and fear. That night, I made a decision—if I wanted a different life, I couldn’t keep swimming in that same pool of thinking. I started to distance myself, not by cutting people off harshly, but by choosing where I invested my time and energy. I sought out mentors, books, seminars—anything that exposed me to people who were hungry, driven, and committed to growth.
That shift was profound. As I surrounded myself with people who raised their standards, who believed in possibility, my language changed. I stopped talking about what I couldn’t do and started focusing on what I would do. My energy lifted, my vision expanded, and my actions became bolder. The peer group I chose became a powerful force pushing me forward, holding me accountable, and inspiring me to become more than I thought possible.
This experience taught me that your peer group isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a shaping force. It either lifts you or limits you. If you want to break through, you have to be willing to change your circle, even if it means feeling uncomfortable or lonely at first. Because who you surround yourself with becomes who you are.
